AnnotationWe tested the hypothesis that leaf age affects photosynthetic induction. Photosynthetic inductions were investigated in young and mature leaves, defined by leaf plastochron index 3–5 and 10–14, from 3 poplar clones: Populus alba, nigra and euramericana. Maximum assimilation rates and stomatal conductance were higher in young leaves than in mature leaves. The clones with high photosynthetic capacity had low induction states 60s after leaf illumination (IS60), and required less time to reach 90% photosynthetic induction (T90). Young leaves exhibited a lower transient stomatal limitation than mature leaves. The time constant of Rubisco activation (τ) was significantly higher in mature leaves of P. alba; whereas there were no differences in the other clones. Our hypothesis was confirmed for transient stomatal limitation; however, for the induction parameters IS60, T90 and τ, photosynthetic induction was more clone-specific and was dependent on leaf age only in some cases.
