Eine eigenständige Episode des Dreißigjährigen Krieges war der Mantuanische Erbfolgekrieg. Während des Krieges wurde Mantua erobert und durch das kaiserliche Heer unter dem Kommando von Generale Collalto, Gallas und Aldringen 14 Monate lang geplündert. Damals gingen die berühmten Gonzaga-Sammlungen zugrunde und ein bedeutender Teil der Beute wanderte in verschiedene Plätze Europas, u.a. in das Trienter Palais von Matthias Gallas.

The war over the Mantova heritage was an independent episode of the Thirty Years´ War. During the war, Mantova was conquered and then looted by the imperial army led by generals Collalto, Gallas and Aldringen for 14 years. At that time, the famous Gonzaga collections ceased to exist, and a significant part of the loot was then taken to different parts of Europe, among other places to Matthias Gallas´s palace in Trento.

Samostatnou epizodou třicetileté války byla válka o mantovské dědictví. Během ní byla Mantova dobita 14 měsíců pleněna císařským vojskem, kterému veleli generálové Collalto, Gallas a Aldringen. Tehdy zanikly slavné gonzagovské sbírky a značná část kořisti pak putovala na různá místa Evropy, mj. do tridentského paláce Matyáše Gallase.
