The ultimate objective of network operators is to have latency free network able to support real time traffic as well as near real-time (instant presence) data communications utilising, for example, Internet Protocol. To achieve this, equipment vendors and network operators are making great efforts to fully exploit the potential of photonic technologies both in transmission as well as in processing of signals in optical domain. State of the art in the field of photonic networks is described.
