The finite element method is one of the most popular tools for the numerical solution of engineering problems formulated in terms of partial differential equations. The latest developments inthis field indicate that its future lies in adaptive higher-order methods, which successfully respond to the increasing complexity of engineering simulations and satisfy the overall trend of simultaneous resolution of phenomena with multiple scales.
