Azimuthal distributions of both .eta. and pí.sub.o mesons emitted at midrapidity are studied in collisions of 1.9 A GeV.sub.58 Ni+.sub.58 Ni and 2 A GeV .sub.40 Ca+.sub.nat. CA.The observed anisotropy corresponds to a negative elliptic flow signal for .eta.mesons, indicating a preferred emissionperpendicular to the reaction plane. In contrast, only smallazimuthal anisotropies are observed for .pí.sub.octivity. In analyzing resulting data, it was established that theabove nuclei are produced in the fragmentation process andthat the reaction cross section is a power-law function ofthe mass and charge numbers of fragmentation products. A strong dependence of the reaction cross section on the nucleonic composition of the targets and of the products is observed. The measured cross sections, together with data available in the literature, are discussed within various assumptions.
