A new diffractometer that is optimized for the analysis of residual stresses (ARES) is currently under construction atthe Geesthacht Neutron Facilities (GeNF). ARES is located at a thermal neutron guide with a characteristic wavelength of 0.1 nm. It will at first be equipped with a double focussing Si (311) monochromator with a fixed vertical and a variable horizontal bending /1/. Samples up to 200 kg can be positioned. A .sub.3 He area detector will be used that was developed at GeNF. It has an active area of 300x300 mm.sub.2and a resolution of about 2 mm. ARES will be put into operation in summer 1999. It will be used in the frame of the GKSSR and D program and will also be open for the national and international user community. Proposals can be sent to GeNF at any time. Travel support is available for national users.
