Carbon paste electrodes modified with various clay minerals were used for the study of cation and anion exchange properties of these clay minerals. Multisweep cyclic voltammetry on the modified electrodes enable a relative comparison of the ion exchange capacities of clay minerals. Sorption of anionic chlorocomplexes of gold and mercury and mercury acetates was found on montmorillonites which proves their anion exchange properties.
