A comparative fluorescence investigation of diacyl and diether phosphatidylcholin vesicles using various probes is presented. The time resolved emission spectra of Patman and Prodan are sensitive to the micropolarity and microviskosity at the membrane interface. Moreover, new approach based on anisotropy and decay time profile is used to differentiate among non-, fully, and mixed interdigitated gel phase structures and to predict structures for new lipid species.
