Je ukázáno, že sluneční a geomagnetická aktivita hrají významnou roli v dlouhodobých trendech pozorovaných ve 20. století. Jejich role roste s rostoucí výškou (geomagnetická aktivita se zdá být hlavní příčinou trendů v F2 vrstvě ionosféry) a klesá s rostoucím časem (např. v E vrstvě ionosféry jsou dlouhodobé změny před r. 1970 vyvolávány hlavně geomagnetickou aktivitou, po r. 1970 hlavně skleníkovým efektem.

The solar and geomagnetic activity is shown to play an important role in the long-term trends observed in the 20th century. Its role increases with increasing height (in the F2 layer of the ionosphere, the geomagnetic activity seems to be dominant cause of trend) and decreases with time (e. g. in the E-layer ionosphere the long-term changes before 1970 appear to be controlled by geomagnetic activity, whereas after 1970 by greenhouse effect).
