The study tested the hypothesis that 'bulky' aromatic DNA adducts in smooth muscle cells of thoracic aortas taken at autopsy from sudden and accidental death male subjects are associated with the stage of atherosclerosis. The effect of known atherosclerotic risk factors such as age, smoking, plasma lipid and vitamin levels and somegenetic susceptibility markers were also evaluated.
