Studies of glial cells during a period of more than 100 years have shown that astrocytes and oligodendrocytes in the ECS express voltage- as well as ligandactivated currents that are involved in the maintainance of ionic and volume homeostasis as welll as neuronal functions, in the release of neuroactive substances, in energy metabolism, in synaptic transmission and in voloume transmission.
