    Landscape structure and function in the Czech Republic underwent remarkable changes during the second half of the 20th century. These policy-driven changes effectively produced a new category of land use-protected areas-where nature was to be conserved human surveillance. This landscape component has posed a number of unforessen positive and negative chalenges that now need to be adressed by new research and management practices.
