In central Europe, probable sporadic permafrost and periglacial-like microclimate occur in non-alpine regions well below 1000 m. a.s.l. Ground ice and cold air outflows frequently persist in these localities throughout summer and boreoalpine flora and fauna are present in these lower parts of the scree slopes. Permafrost-like periglacial microclimatic conditions have been verified by numerous temperature measurements in several scree slope geoecosystems, by observations of ground ice in mid to late summer and by geophysical surveys.
