Čtverec a kruh jsou základními geometrickými obrazci, které se v dějinách umění pojily s určitými obecnými významy. Čtverec jako symbol pozemskosti a racia je protipólem kruhu-koule, ztvárňujícímu celek prostoru i času, pól božský. Tyto archetypy se objevují i v soudobé malbě: kruh je základním prvkem obrazů Václava Boštíka. Důsledné propracování plochy malby do pravoúhlých obrazců pak dominuje v tvorbě Václava Stratila z první poloviny osmdesátých let.

The square and the circle are elementary geometric shapes linked to certain general meanings in art history. The square as a symbol of mundanity and ratio is the opposite of the circle-sphere, which represents the whole of space and time, the divine aspect. These archetypes also appear in contemporary painting: a circle is the basic element of paintings by Václav Boštík, while a consistent use of rectangular shapes in painting dominates in the work of Václav Stratil from the first half of the 1980s.
