Overview of the development and of the state of sociology in the Czech Republic since the fall of the communist regime in 1989 till 2001. Predominantly academic sociology is covered. Issues discussed include a brief analysis of the earlier history of the discipline since late 19th century, its redefinition and transformation after 1990, the core theoretical and methodological orientations, thematic orientations and their impact on institutional structures, funding, public space and academic debates, international cooperation, impact of sociological research in the public sphere, human resources and views on further development. Attached is a selected bibliography of books and volumes published by Czech authors in 1990 ů 2002, both in Czech and the foreign languages, and a list of journals, bulletins and encyclopaedic works.
