Basic features and problems of the method of reconstruction of the ground surface temperature history from the temperature-depth profiles measured at present in boreholes are outlined and illustrated. The main methodological problem is the one-dimensional, purely conductive representation of the subsurface temperature field used by all existing systematic inversion algorithms.
