Irradiation of polyethylene (PE) with 40 and 150 keV Ar+ ions to the fluences from 1x1013 to 1x1015 ions cm-2 increased surface wettability and relative content of carbon in this material, which resulted in a higher adsorption of cell-adhesion mediating proteins from the serum of the culture media as well as higher adhesion, subsequent growth and differentiation of rat vascular smooth muscle cells cultured on the modified PE.
