This chapter reviews symmetry aspects of Raman scattering by lattice vibrational excitations (phonons) in crystals. Group-theoretical method based on transformation properties is outlined and the general form of Raman tensors in all crystal classes is given in revised comprehensive tables. Attention is paid to morphic effects, i.e. changes in Raman selection rules due to external fields.
