In this paper we have shown that only a sub-set of N. tomentosiformis varieties contains a specific geminirval insertion in the genome. This insertion termed as GRD3/GRD53 is found in all varieties of tobacco. The data implicate that the spectrum of potenitial donors of paternal tobacco genome can now be narrowed to a genotype of N. tomentosiformis that can be genetically characterised by the presence of GRD53 and GRD3 repeats and that tobacco formed after the divergence within N. tomentosiformis.
