Altough at present in the world literature a whole seriesof proccedings is published about the beginnings of the modern human population and Late Paleolithic, for the subsequent period of culminating Upper Paleolithic (Gravettian,30-20 thousand years before the present) such publicationhas so far been missing. These proceedings are based on theconference organised by the European Science Foundation incooperation with the Archaeological Institute Brno at Pavlov and D. Věstonice in 1995. The problems are covered bothgeographically (Siberia, northern Europe, the Danube catchment area, France, the Mediterranean) and thematically (natural environment, physical anthropology, technology, art,decorations, burials).
