Lead iodide PbI2 is a promising material for X-ray and ç detectors. We report the development and optimisation of the method of direct synthesis for the preparation of PbI2 single crystals. We have introduced rear earth elements as admixtures during synthesis in order to study their influence on the quality of prepared material. The prepared material has been characterised by measurements of electrical resistivity and low temperature photo luminescence, and by X-Ray diffraction.
