Kvartérní klimatický cyklus je charakterizován rozdíly mezi glaciálními fázemi, kterým dominuje otevřené prostředí, a fázemi interglaciálními se zapojenými lesními formacemi. Naopak šíření lesů v holocénu bylo potlačeno neolitickým zemědělským osídlením, které umožnilo přežití pozdně glaciálních a časně holocénních stepních biocenóz v nejteplejších a nejsušších oblastech střední Evropy až do současnosti Tento proces je dobře dokumentován na základě postglaciálních sledů malakofauny a přítomnosti černozemí.

The Quaternary Climatic Cycle is characterized by the contrast between glacial phases dominated by open country and interglacials with closed forest cover. By contrast, the Holocene woodland expansion was hindered by the early Neolithic agricultural occupation which enabled the survival of Lateglacial and Early holocene steppe biocenoses in the warmest and driest areas of Central Europe up to the present time. This process is well documented by the Postglacial succession of malacofaunas and the persistence of the chernozem soils.
