Hranice vegetace mohou nabývat v principu dvojí kvality. Jsou to jednak hranice v prostoru a čase, jednak to mohou být hranice odlišující organizační struktury: opakují se porosty a živočišná společenstva, soubor ekosystémů. Pojmem, který se vmezeřuje k ekosystému, je krajina, která představuje původní přirozené struktury kvalitativně a prostorově pozměněné lidskou činností.

This paper is (i) short essay on hierarchy theory and its specific application in vegetation science, and (ii) review of methods of edge and boundary detection between plant communities. Specific terminology of hierarchical structures is discussed, especially the difference between the terms "level" and "scale" in real vegetation and temporal-/ scale-dependent hierarchical structures.
