Pro účinnou ochranu populací je tedy často nutné znát limitující faktory po celý roční cyklus. Analýza stabilních izotopů z tkání tažných ptáků představuje alternativní způsob, jak propojit hnízdiště, zimoviště a tahové zastávky jednotlivých populací. Tato metoda využívá fakt, že izotopové složení tkání odráží izotopové složení potravy, tedy i místa jejího geografického původu. Ptáci, kteří se pohybují mezi místy s odlišným izotopovým složením, tak ve svých tkáních mohou nést chemickou informaci o místě, kde se příslušná tkáň vytvořila, a to nám může pomoci vystopovat jejich geografický původ. Plánovaná studie by proto měla vždy nejdříve zjistit, zda se daný druh pohybuje a živí v prostředích s odlišnými poměry stabilních izotopů a zvolit nejvhodnější studovanou tkáň. Jako každá metoda má i analýza stabilních izotopů mnohá omezení, a proto je vhodné ji použít v kombinaci s dalšími přístupy. Description in English Survival of migratory birds is influenced by conditions on breeding and wintering grounds as well as at stopover sites. For effective conservation limiting factors acting throughout the annual cycle must be identified. Analysis of stable isotopes from tissues of migratory birds presents an alternative tool for linking breeding and wintering grounds of particular populations. This method uses the fact that isotopic composition of bird tissues reflects that of the diet and indicates thus the place of its origin. Birds moving between locations with distinct isotopic composition carry chemical information on the site where the tissue was grown and this enables us to trace their geographic origin. Future studies should make sure that the species moves between and feeds in environments with distinct stable isotope ratios and choose the best type of tissue. As any other method, analysis of stable isotopes has its limitations and it is thus convenient to combine it with other approaches.
