Autor dokazuje, že Descartes nepracuje s moderním pojmem vědomí, nýbrž termín „conscientia“ používá jako ilustrativní metaforu ve svém návrhu pojmout mysl jako myslící věc, tj. jako věc, která soudí. Argument vychází nejen z interpretace vlastních Descartových textů, ale také z interpretace protikladu prekarteziánského kontextu (příkladem je Goclenius) s kontextem postkarteziánským. Argument ústí v ten závěr, že Descartes sice zastával velice orginální pojetí mysli, rozhodně ho však nelze nazývat vynálzcem moderního pojmu mysli. Tento titul, jak se zdá, přísluší spíše jeho dobovým oponentům (např. Bourdinovi).

Author argues that Descartes does not work with modern concept of consciousness, but uses the term „conscientia“ as a illustrative metaphor to propose his concept of mind as a thinking thing, i.e. as a judging thing. The argument based on interpretation not only of Descartes’s textes, but also on interpretation of instances of the term in pre-Cartesian context (viz. in Goclenius) contrasted with post-Cartesian context, aims to establish that Descartes holds quite oroginal concpto of mind, but he cannot be labeled as „inventor of modern mind“. This title seems to be more suitable for his contemporary oppponents (e.g. Bourdin.)
