In this work we have studied the fate of satellite sequences inherited from progenitor genomes in several Nicotiana allopolyploid species. In Nicotiana tabacum supposed to be several tens of thousands years old allotetraploid the parental satellites remain largely unchanged except for one intergenomic translocation. In Repanda section, the allotetraploids are supposed to be about 5 million years. In this section the parental satellites were only barely detectable while new satellites have evolved. The data indicate that there is a near wholesale replacement of the vast majority of DNA in these plant genomes in less than 5 million years.
