Retention of nitrogen and phosphorus in the river network is caused by various physical, chemical, and biological processes that either permanently remove nitrate from water, e.g., through denitrification, or temporarily store nitrogen and phosphorus compounds thus delaying their transport in the river basins. The handbook consists of two parts: (i) a software manual of the EUROHARP-NUTRET programme that was developed to assist river basin managers in calculating the nutrient retention in catchments or in single water body types, and (ii) a contemporary literature review on nutrient retention in streams, rivers, lakes, reservoirs, and riparian wetlands.

Retence dusíku a fosforu v říční síti je způsobena různými fyzikálními, chemickými a biologickými procesy, které buďto trvale odstraňují dusičnany z vody, např. denitrifikací, nebo dočasně zadržují sloučeniny dusíku a fosforu a tím oddalují jejich transport z povodí. Příručka se skládá ze dvou částí: (i) z manuálu programu EUROHARP-NUTRET, který byl vyvinut pro potřeby manažerů povodí při výpočtech retence živin v povodích nebo v jednotlivých vodních tělesech a (ii) rešerše současné vědecké literatury o retenci živin v potocích, řekách, jezerech, nádržích a příbřežních mokřadech.
