AnnotationQuartzites of the Skalice/Žitenice type near Litoměřice, Ohře Rift graben, were produced by quartz cementation of Paleogene sands derived from the Upper Cretaceous Merboltice Formation sandstones. Their mineralogical and geochemical studies were motivated by the find of their spatial relationship to a flow of basic ignimbrite. Two types of quartz cementation were documented implying different silicification settings: 1. the zone of permanent groundwater saturation, and 2. the overlying unsaturated zone exposed to higher temperatures, with crystallographically confined quartz overgrowths. Results of microprobe studies of the latter type of cement and the overlying ignimbrite revealed parallels (elevated Al2O3 contents) confirming their genetic relationship.
