This article is devoted to the experimental research of the catchment retention capacity in the Czech headwater. Runoff formation in two small catchments in contrast conditions is analysed: (1) Sention - a revitalised agricultural catchment in a submontane area, (2) Modry dul - a natural forested catchment in the Krkonose Mts. In both catchments it was identified where the flood-generating water really originates, which are the pathways, and how old this water is.
