AnnotationTreehole aquatic metazoan communities were studied in beech forests in southern Bohemia during 1994. Basic characteristics of treeholes, such as type of treehole, volume, pH and conductivity of the contents were measured. Through this investigations 25 metazoan taxa belonging to Nematoda, Rotifera, Tardigrada, Oribatida, Crustacea and Insecta were found. In most cases the Diptera Aedes geniculatus Olivier, 1791 (Culicidae) and Metriocnemus martinii Thienemann, 1921 (Chironomidae), Nematoda and digonont Rotifera were dominant. The pH and conductivity varied over a wide range (from 3,8 to 9,0 and from 40 to 2160 µScm-1, respectively) among treeholes, but in most cases pH, conductivity and/or water volume varied only slightly during the season within each cavity.
