Microstructurally short fatigue cracks are modeled and numerically analyzed. The different levels of stress constraint are quantified by using T-stress. The corresponding calculations are performed by using a finite element method. It is shown that short fatigue cracks generally behave more sensitively to constraint than long ones. The nominal value of the stress intensity factor K and T-stress are not adequate to describe the behavior of a short of microstructure, must be used to explain, at least qualitatively, the anomalous behavior of short fatigue cracks.
