Annotation	The article deals with the development of educational policy after 1989 in the Czech Republic. The transition to democracy and a market economy brought about significant changes in the legislative frame, number of applicants, admitted students, autonomy of universities and their financing. The most significant structural changes in the Czech tertiary education system addressed in the paper are decentralization and diversification.
