AnnotationPhylogeographic study of mitochondrial DNA variation revealed a complex glacial history for the bank vole primarily inhabiting temperate forest. Glacial refugia located in Central and Eastern Europe, as opposed to the traditionally recognized Mediterranean refugia, had made a major contribution to the modern population of this species in Europe.
