Kapitola popisuje ranou historii Byzantského císařství do 6. století, vládu císaře Justiniána, přestavbu Konstantinopole, za jeho vlády a ikonoklastické hnutí. Také se věnuje příchodu Slovanů do Byzance, cyrilo-metodějské misi, Prvnímu Bulharskému císařství stejně jako roli žen a eunuchům a specifickému postavení klášterů v císařství.

The chapter describes the early history of the Byzantine Empire until the 6th c. describing among others the rule of Justinian, the reconstruction of Constantinople under his reign and the Iconoclast controversy. Further, it inquires into the coming of the Slavs to Byzantium, the Cyrillo-Methodian Mission, First Bulgarian Empire as well as the role of women and eunuchs and monasteries in the empire.
