This paper focuses on the role of Czechoslovak Communist politician Alexander Dubček, one of the preponderant figures of the Prague Spring of 1968. While in Slovakia Dubček is often cherished as a national hero of sorts, Czechs tend to be more critical of his role in politics. Interestingly, this is not due to any inter-national hostility, as Czechs understand Dubček as a figure of their owh history. The paper analyses key political and cultural circumstances that engendered this 'cool', rather critical attitude in comparison with the importance attributed to Dubček in the Slovak discourse.
