Text se zabývá reflexí umění 19. století a lidového umění na stránkách Uměleckého měsíčníku. Analyzuje důvody, proč byli mezi umělci 19. století oceňováni Josef Navrátil, Karel Purkyně a zejména Mikoláš Aleš. Vedle těchto jmen si umělci a teoretici sdružení kolem časopisu začali také všímat lidového umění a jeho specifických kvalit a čerpali z něj inspiraci.

The text analyses visual art of the 19th century as reflected in the journal Umělecký měsíčník and looks for the reasons why personalities as Josef Navrátil, Karel Purkyně and especially Mikoláš Aleš were regarded as suitable for emulation. Apart from these, the artists and theoreticians of the journal studied and exhibited folk art and analysed its specific character as one of the sources of their inspirations.
