Engineering material research today is mostly driven by the industry demand to improve properties of currently used materials and/or to develop new materials with unique properties for advanced applications. In this respect, besides the neverending search for new advanced materials, the research activities focus on materials processing - the series of operations that transforms a raw material into final industrial products. The operations can be divided into those performed on the material in a liquid state (casting, molding etc.) and those performed on the material in a solid form (forging, extrusion, rolling, welding, sintering, heat treating etc.). Firstly, they form the material into the desired shape and secondly, they alter or improve the material properties. The researchers have always been trying to follow the evolution of material structure and microstructure as well as mechanical properties during the materials processing. They do it either experimentally by metallurgical, microscopic and analytic ex-situ observations on samples cut from the materials after individual processing steps or theoretically, by computer simulation.
