V bádání o době železné, stejně jako v celé archeologii se po celá desetiletí objevují sdělení, o jejichž pravdivosti se nepochybuje a jejichž obsah se proto zpravidla dále nezkoumá. Nezřídka přitom již upadlo v zapomnění, kdy, za jakých okolností a hlavně jakými metodami tato tvrzení vznikla a přitom často slouží jako východiska k dalšímu zkoumání. V bádání se tak projevuje určitá setrvačnost, která však v některých případech paradoxně nejenže nepodporuje pohyb vpřed, ale naopak jej brzdí.

In Iron Age research, as well as in the whole of archaeology, certain statements are repeated for decades without questioning their veracity and without further investigating their actual bases. It is often forgotten when, under what circumstances and mainly by what methodological means these statements came to be. This is so despite the fact that these statements often constitute the very foundations of further research. Research is thus characterised by a kind of inertia which does not help it advance but, quite to the contrary, only hampers its pace.
