We implemented an electrification module including the simulation of cloud to ground discharges to the COSMO NWP
model. The module considers non-inductive and inductive charging and utilizes two-moment cloud microphysics. We
used the COSMO NWP model to simulate the development of convective storms, which were initiated in the model by
the assimilation of radar reflectivity data. We evaluated the development of the electric field in convective storm
clouds and studied whether the electrification scheme can generate lightning and how the simulated and observed
occurrences of lightning agree in space and time.
