Pád komunistického režimu v roce 1989 znamenal nejen možnost zkoumat Husa a husitství striktně vědecky, nýbrž přinesl i kontroverzní pohledy v široké škále od postmoderní relativizace (zřetelné především v komiksech a animovaných filmech) až k projevům obdivu i odsudků. V rámci ekumenického dialogu ocenil historický význam Jana Husa papež Jan Pavel II. při návštěvě Prahy v dubnu 1990.

The fall of the Communist regime in 1989 was not only the opportunity to research Hus and Hussitism in strictly scientific manner, but also brought controversial points of view ranging from postmodern relativism (mainly in comics and animated films) to admiration and on the other hand condemnation. While visiting Prague in April 1990, Pope John Paul II appreciated, in the framwork of ecumenical dialogue, the historical importance of Jan Hus.
