Chemical and bio-decontamination effects induced by plasma in water upon electro-spraying through DC-driven positive transient spark discharge in air were investigated. Inactivation of Escherichia coli in plasma treated water was determined in dependence on the solution pH (controlled by buffers) and correlated with chemical changes in water upon treatment by plasma. Productions of H2O2, nitrites, nitrates, peroxynitrites and pH changes were determined and the extent of oxidative stress induced in bacteria was evaluated by measuring the thiobarbituric acid reactive substances (TBARS). The degree of inactivation and oxidative damage of bacteria increased with increasing acidity of the solution. Acidic nitrites with H2O2 were determined as the most important bactericidal agents in water treated by air plasma.
