The unique combination of nonreciprocal magneto-optical materials (dielectric or metallic) and extreme subwavelength field confinement and excitation via surface plasmon polariton coupling on metallic interfaces or nanostructures, has been discovered to lead to a large variety of strongly enhanced magneto-optical phenomena or even entirely novel nonreciprocal and unidirectional behaviours. This very novel reserch area has appropriately been coined "magnetoplasmonics" and has over the last few years seen a dramtic expansion.
