The paper deals with effects of the deposition of thin glass layers on the inner wall of glass tubes and high-temperature treatment of the layers on the refractive-index profiles of the prepared preforms. Silica layers doped with germanium oxide, aluminium oxide, rare-earth ions were prepared by the MCVD method, solution-doping technique and the sol-gel method. It is shown that the refractive index decreases and the core diameter increases if a layer with a thickness less than 10 ćm is deposited.
