In the present paper an atmospheric pressure deposition technique has been introduced enabling to protect the paper or pulp board surface with thin films with desired surface properties, permeability and wear resistance. The protective hydrophobic films were deposited by means of surface barrier discharge using different mixtures of organosilicon monomers with nitrogen. The water permeability of thin film substrate system decreased more then 5000 times.
