Autoři využívají svého různorodého metodologického zázemí (filologie, dějiny estetiky, teatrologie, komparatistika) pro mezioborový přístup k tématu, na jehož základě zkoumají přítomnost prvků antické tradice v tak odlišných kulturně-historických fenoménech, jakými jsou např. inscenace antického dramatu, formování moderních vědeckých disciplín (konkrétně klasické archeologie) nebo sokolská cvičení. Styčným bodem všech studií v knize obsažených je snaha odhalit tuto recipovanou antiku jako kulturní konstrukt a ukázat, jakými způsoby byl obraz antiky v minulosti i dnes zneužíván (i nevědomky), deformován a manipulován. Kniha tedy mimo jiné přispívá k pochopení obecných principů manipulace v médiích a ve veřejném prostoru a strategie 'přepisování' či 'přeznačování' minulosti podle aktuálních dobových kritérií. Description in English The book explores reception of classical antiquity in Czech culture from the second half of the 19th century until now. The individual studies, based on various research backgrounds of their authors (i.e. philology, art history, theatre studies, and comparative studies), offer an interdisciplinary approach to the subject. The authors analyse and contextualise such diverse historical and cultural phenomena as are theatre performances of classical drama, rise of modern scholarly disciplines, physical education in the practice of Sokol, etc. The individual researches reveal common tendencies in Czech reception of classical culture, especially the devised nature of the concept of antiquity, and a constant process of its reusing and abusing in accordance with changing political and ideological aims. The monograph, thus, represents a contribution to the debate of how concepts and ideas are being constructed and manipulated by individuals, institutions, and media according to actual needs.
