This chapter examines the impact on Gottwaldov (Zlín) of political, economic and social developments in Czechoslovakia after 1968. The first part offers a short overview of the growth of the city before 1968. The next part examines a local istory of the ‘consolidation’ period after the Warsaw Pact invasion. The third section assesses how larger socio-economic trends inter-reacted with the specifics of the normalisation period at the local level. It explores political struggles in the city after August 1968 and analyses the outcome of the party purges that took place in 1970. The last section shows how the problems of the centrally planned economy affected everyday life in the city in the 1970s and 1980s.
