Abstract: The paper explores the relationship of the frequency of parts of speech with i) the verse length, ii) literary genre (lyrics vs. epics) and iii) metre (trochee vs. iamb). For the purpose of this analysis, approximately 110,000 verse lines from a Czech poet Adolf Heyduk (1835–1923) have been processed, most of which rhyme. The analysis has demonstrated that the frequency of parts of speech depends on the verse length and on the literary genre. The frequencies of parts of speech in the trochee and iamb and in rhymed and unrhymed verse do not differ. The frequency of parts of speech in the beginning and end of line differs from their frequency in the whole text.
