Kniha za pomoci rozsáhlého ikonografického materiálu provádí čtenáře světem české mimouniverzitní vědy od 18. století až po současnost. Hlavní pozornost autoři zaměřili na Akademii věd České republiky a její nejvýznamnější předchůdce, ať již se jednalo o Československou akademii věd fungující v letech 1953-1992 nebo o starší instituce jako byla Česká akademie věd a umění založená již v roce 1890 nebo od 18. století působící Královská česká společnost nauk. Jednotlivé kapitoly se však věnují i Masarykově akademii práce či hlavní vědecké instituci Němců žijících v českých zemích – Gesellschaft zur Förderung Deutscher Wissenschaft, Kunst und Literatur in Böhmen.

The book with the help of extensive iconographic material takes the reader through the world of Czech non-university science from 18th century to the present. The main focus of the authors concentrated on the Academy of Sciences of the Czech Republic and its most important predecessor, whether it was the Czechoslovak Academy of Sciences, running from 1953-1992 or older institutions such as the Czech Academy of Sciences and Arts, founded in 1890, or from 18 acting century Royal Bohemian Society of Sciences. Individual chapters are devoted but also Masaryk Academy of Labour (Masarykova akademie práce) or major scientific institution Germans living in the Czech lands - Gesellschaft zur Förderung Deutscher Wissenschaft, Kunst und Literatur in Bohemia.
