Description in English The dissertation discusses the waqf policy of Muhammad Ali in the first half of the 19th century, then the development of the central waqf bureau up to the end of the 19th century, and the process of conferring property rights to the land which caused an unprecedented expansion of family-like endowments during the first half of the 20th century. At that time waqfs were exposed to the attacks of Egyptian intellectuals and politicians who alerted to the danger of possible transformation of all landed properties in the country into the waqf. The dissertation traces manifestations of such attacks in journalistic and juridical texts. Since the objections against waqf centred exclusively on family-like endowments, the opponents of waqfs requested either a reform of family foundations or their complete abolition. Suggestions of the first group were incorporated in the Waqf Law of 1946, which the dissertation analyses in detail, as well as waqf laws passed after the coup d´état of 1952.
