Fibers with inverted-graded index /IGI/ profiles of the core with refractive-index values above that of silica were drawn from MCVD preforms doped in the core with GeO2. The sensitivity of the fibers to refractive-index changes of the optical cladding was theoretically determined on the basis of measured refractive-index profiles by using ray optics. The sensitivity was determined both for the axial excitation as well as for excitation by an collimated beam. These theoretical results are compared with experimental data.
